Cracking Asian Handicap: Football Betting Odds

Asian handicap explained with examples

Football originated in Europe with the game of "Home and Away", where players predicted whether the home team would win, the away team would win, or it would be a draw. Later, Asian betting companies developed the "Asian Handicap" (Asian Odds), dividing one goal into units of 0.25 goals, creating the "Handicap Market". Football handicap betting is a popular form of sports betting, with formats like 0/0.5, 0.5/1, 1/1.5 being common. This guide will help you quickly understand these seemingly complex numbers, deepening your knowledge of sports handicaps and enhancing your confidence in betting!

What is Asian Handicap betting (AH)?

Asian Handicap (AH) is a form of sports betting that originated in Asia and has become extremely popular worldwide. It is one of the three common betting methods, along with European Handicap (European Odds) and American Handicap (American Odds). The most common form of AH is the "Handicap Market".

  • Basic Principle of Handicap Market: The fundamental principle of the Handicap Market is to "reflect the difference in scores." The offered handicap only applies to one of the teams playing home or away. Those betting on this team can have outcomes of a full loss, half loss, draw, half win, or full win.

  • Representation of Asian Handicap: Asian Handicap is usually represented in decimal form, such as 0.25, 0.5, 1, etc. These decimals indicate the goal handicap, where 0 represents a draw, positive numbers indicate the handicap is given to the home team, and negative numbers indicate the handicap is given to the away team. The larger the handicap, the stronger the bookmakers believe that team is, requiring them to give more points to the opponent.

What do 0.5/1, 1/1.5, etc. mean?

In the world of football asian handicap betting, you often encounter formats like 0/0.5, 0.5/1, 1/1.5, and so on. These formats, grouping 2 numbers together, are common in both handicap and over/under betting.

Taking 0/0.5 as an example, this means half of the bet is placed on the level handicap 0, and the other half is placed on the handicap 0.5. If the match ends in a draw, half of the bet on the level handicap 0 is considered a loss, while the other half on the handicap 0.5 is considered a win, creating the specific type of bet result known as "win half, lose half," adding flexibility to the betting.

How to Determine Win or Loss in Asian Handicap?

Let's use the notation of the asian handicap numbers to explain:

  • 0: Both sides finish level, equal chances of winning.

  • 0/0.5: If the match ends in a draw, half of the bet is lost, a win results in full payout.

  • 0.5: The team receiving the handicap must either draw or lose for the bet to lose; a win results in full payout.

  • 0.5/1: If the team receiving the handicap draws or loses, the bet is lost; a one-goal win results in half payout, a two-goal win in full payout.

  • 1: The team receiving the handicap must lose or draw for the bet to lose; a one-goal win is a draw, a two-goal win is a full payout.

  • 1/1.5: If the team receiving the handicap wins by one goal, half of the bet is lost; a two-goal win results in full payout.

  • 1.5: The team receiving the handicap must lose, draw, or win by one goal for the bet to lose; a two-goal win results in full payout.

  • 1.5/2: If the team receiving the handicap wins by two goals, half of the bet is lost; a three-goal win results in full payout.

  • 2: The team receiving the handicap must win by exactly two goals for the bet to be a draw; a three-goal win results in full payout.

※Example of Asian Handicap Betting

Let's take AC Milan with a handicap of 1/1.5 against Bologna as an example:

If you bet on AC Milan to win, they need to win by at least two goals for you to win the bet (e.g., 3-1, 2-0, etc.). If they only win by one goal, it's considered a draw, and you would lose the bet.
